Pennsylvania pipeline woes, ruptures, subsidence
Just imagine. You buy your property. You care for your land. You plant trees and bushes. You clean up the trash. You delight in the biodiversity that thrives under your attentive care. The small stream which flows through your land is part of the Susquehanna River - Chesapeake Bay Watershed. You happily embrace the responsibility of safeguarding this important riparian buffer.
You pay your mortgage payment to the bank on time each month. You pay your property taxes to the schools, to the county and to the local government year after year. You plan to live out your lives on this little bit of heaven.
Then one day you learn that a multimillion dollar business has your land in its sights. They want to take an "easement" of at least 90 feet to 100 feet wide. They will cut down every tree and kill every living thing in their path. They will replace it with a "gas line pathway" of mono culture grass. While you still own the land, you are prohibited from building on it. You are prohibited from planting on it. You are to tolerate the invasion of a 20 inch to 30 inch wide gas pipeline across your land.
If you refuse to permit this trespass and easement, the utility designated corporation can take it against your will through eminent domain. Government has the power to take citizen's land for a public purpose like: a school, a roadway, bridge or park. But some private businesses have this special privilege - the power to take citizen's property for their own profits.
Your local elected officials all support this destructive project. They favor the huge financial benefits to a single company over the property rights of you and your neighbors. They are willing to sacrifice their neighbors and constituents. They support the introduction of danger (gas pipelines do explode - 50 homes destroyed) into a residential area for an industrial purpose.
May 2015 Thanks! Special thanks to the Otzinachson Regional Group of the Sierra Club, Lewisburg for holding this meeting! We got lots of great information about our rights and options from eminent domain attorney Michael F. Faherty. The Daily Item report on the meeting |
